Freeze the files the big three don't cover

Set onceAbout 20 minNow

Why it matters: A criminal who can't open a credit card may open a bank account or phone line in your name instead. These two freezes close those routes.

Do it

  1. Request a security freeze on the ChexSystems consumer website.
  2. Request a security freeze on the NCTUE consumer website.
  3. Store the PINs or logins in your password manager.
  4. Lift them temporarily before you open a new bank account or phone plan.

Check it worked: You have security freezes at ChexSystems, which banks check for new accounts, and NCTUE, which phone and utility companies check.

Simply put

The big three freezes lock the front door; these two lock the side doors. A criminal who can't open a credit card may try a bank account or phone line instead, and these freezes close that route.

In detail

Accounts opened in a victim's name are often used to move stolen money for other scams, which can land the victim in a bank investigation. NCTUE freezes are free to place and lift; ChexSystems says it doesn't currently charge, though it may where state law allows a fee.

Points toward the Long View: no back route left for opening accounts in your name.
